Peruvian Economy and Finance Minister Alfredo Thorne on Thursday met with Lima Regional Governor Nelson Chui and Lima northern districts mayors to develop joint measures in response to weather emergencies.

As is known, Peru is currently at the mercy of torrential downpours and floods.

"You will find me more often here [in Lima northern districts] than in the Ministry's premises," the minister said as he stressed the government's commitment to on-site aid efforts to assist victims.

Road habilitation, the priority

The government official visited the said area to get first-hand information about the state of affairs, and to understand the scale of the problems faced in Lima provinces.

"The priority is to habilitate access routes in Lima's northern areas, and to guarantee hospitals have enough medicines to cater for disaster victims," Thorne said via Twitter.

"The most important thing is to get people in danger to safety. We must help our fellow citizens," he added.

In this sense, the minister noted the conditions of homes will be assessed and families in jeopardy will be relocated to safe areas.

Lastly, the economist urged mayors of Lima northern districts —and areas declared in state of emergency— to take the lead and use resources allocated by the Finance Ministry to address the contingencies.

After the meeting, Thorne overflew affected areas in Lima region's northern provinces.
