Former Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua said the vast Peruvian experience in the United Nations system and peaceful resolution of controversies will be of great help to the UN Security Council for the 2018-2019 period.
It must be noted the Andean nation is one of the five non-permanent members of the most powerful UN body.
Last year, the United Nations General Assembly elected
Peru as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2018-2019 period. Its candidacy was supported by 186 votes, thus obtaining the required two-thirds majority.
"Peru has a vast experience that is worth noting. This is not the first time it joins the Council. It has the conditions to do so, and this reflects its multilateralist vision of cooperation and participation in maintaining peace, as well as its closeness to international law," he told Andina news agency.
This will be the Inca country's fifth time holding a non-permanent seat, following previous elections for the periods of 1955-1956, 1973-1974, 1985-1986, and 2006-2007.
Maurtua explained that, as a UN Security Council member, Peru is obligated to comply with Council decisions to maintain international peace and security, work out a plan for a system of arms regulation, and promote a peaceful resolution of disputes.
On Monday, Peru officially
began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council with the intention of defending solutions to promote "huge consensus."
