Peru is likely to attract up to 200,000 Chinese travelers each year, due to the country's huge potential to improve the visitor experience at tourist attractions along its territory.

"A total of 50,000 Chinese tourists are expected by the end of the year —a small figure considering the country's potential. We want it to grow fourfold within the coming years," Ferreyros was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.

The Asian market is very important to reach the government's goal of receiving 7 million foreign tourists per year.

"We have given priority to various markets like the neighboring countries (Ecuador, Chile, Colombia and Brazil) to achieve the goal, but we also looking at large markets such as Asia, mainly China," he stated.

The visa waiver for Chinese citizens holding a visa or permanent resident status in the United States, Canada, or any Schengen State was one of the actions taken to boost tourism from China.

"So far this year, the number of Chinese arrivals to Peru has increased by 40%, which is still low, which is why Peruvian tourist attractions need to be better marketed in China," he commented.

According to the government official, his sector is holding an event to bring China's leading tour operators to Peru by the end of the year.
