The Government of Peru exhorted the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) to arrange, as soon as possible, a visit to Venezuela in order to promote the dialogue between the government and the opposition and, therefore, ease the political tension in that country.

In a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peru announced it will support any initiative to convene a presidential meeting aimed at encouraging dialogue and democratic consultation in Venezuela.

Such efforts should be focused on “building bridges and creating spaces for broad and open dialogue; all this within the framework of respect for freedoms and human rights resulting in a restored social peace and harmony among Venezuelans.”

It continued: “For this reason, we exhort the Unasur mission, composed of Foreign Ministers of Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador, to speed up and redouble efforts so that their visit to Venezuela can be arranged as soon as possible and they can achieve the aforementioned objectives.”

The Foreign Ministry regrets the death of a Venezuelan student and said collaborative efforts will have to be redoubled to prevent violent actions.
