17:22 | Bonn, Oct. 21.

Peru’s Environment Minister and President of the COP20, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, joined the opening session of the final round of formal negotiations before the 20th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (COP20) to be held in Lima on Dec.1-12.

This session, that kicked off on October 20 and will run until 25 in Bonn, represents a key opportunity for the governments to develop in depth a solid text for the new draft agreement on climate change, to be signed during the COP21 in 2015 in Paris.

In his speech, Pulgar-Vidal highlighted “it is essential that we reach a possible consensus this week on the content and the scope of this information –draft climate agreement-, as well as on the best way to encourage and guarantee that this information will be clear, transparent and understandable, next year.”

Besides, he assured he is convinced that we are not far from reaching an agreement, and added that he is “confident about the process and sure that this work will be promoted by all Parties”.

Last but not least, the Minister Pulgar-Vidal encouraged country representatives to work in a joint manner.

“My presence here shows my total commitment to work with all of you and with the Co-Presidents of the COP20 for success in Lima. So, let’s turn discussions in solutions this week. Let’s go from words to hope. Let’s make things possible to show the world our responsibility. Let’s do it,” he noted.

On the other hand, the UN Secretary for Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, recalled “the UN Climate Summit in New York proves that there are means to address climate change.”

The UN high Officer emphasized the political will showed in New York and asked negotiators to do their greatest effort to bring positions together in Bonn, as the last chance to make progress in the agreements before the event in Lima.

“We started in New York, knowing that we shall, can and will find a solution”, Figueres pointed out.

The Ad-Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) is carrying out the sixth part of its second session in Bonn, Germany, from October 20 to 25, 2014.

The purpose of these meetings held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) is helping Governments to generate climate ambition until 2020, year in which the new universal climate agreement is expected to enter into force.

The Working Group has encouraged a larger climate implication among governments, experts and other stakeholders, to implement specific policies and actions that will add to this appropriate moment to change.
