The Peruvian government will soon assist the population affected by mercury pollution in Peru's southeastern Madre de Dios region.
The measure aims to prevent adverse effects which may damage people's health, Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal announced.
Several national communities from three Madre de Dios region's provinces were harmed by mercury pollution levels above maximum permitted limits.
During a press conference from Lima’s Government Palace, Pulgar-Vidal also mentioned actions to be taken by the Executive Power.
Ministries of Health, Production, Culture and the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) will also support communities, it was announced.
The government declared state of emergency in districts: Tampopata, Inambari, Las Piedras, Laberinto, Fitzcarrald, Manu, Madre de Dios, Huepetuhe, Iñapari, Iberia and Tahuamanu.
