Peru emerges as popular tourism destination in region

Peru has overtaken Uruguay as the sixth most popular tourism destination in Latin America, according to a Latinvex analysis of data from the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Peru was ranked fifth in the region in terms of tourism income and fourth in the number of visitors among South American countries in 2002.

According to the report, Peru received a total of US$ 2.6 billion from tourism revenue last year, with each visitor spending about 934 dollars while in the Andean country.

Peru received around 2.8 million foreign tourists in 2012, up from 2.5 million a year earlier.

Total revenues from international visitors to Latin America grew by 5.3 percent last year, reaching US$ 68.9 billion.
