Defense Minister Jorge Nieto on Thursday arrived in northern Piura region, where the government delivered five tons of humanitarian aid to citizens affected by low temperatures.

Thus, residents of eastern Ayabaca province —located at 2,715 m.a.s.l.— benefited from the initiative.

Aid was composed of donations, including 1,000 bread pieces, 1,000 servings of chocolate milk and warm clothing kits, among others.

Efforts also included medical assistance provision.

Relief measures are comprised in the government's 2017 "Antes Peru" (Peru Ahead) Multisectoral Mitigation Plan.

Said initiative is geared towards preventing, as well as mitigating fatalities and damage caused by frost events among highland populations.

The S/100-million (about US$30.75 million) plan also includes actions to deliver: food, housing, productive development, health, education, transport and electrification services to vulnerable populations across 16 regions.

This way, the government seeks to avert major damage and casualties, like the ones caused by natural disasters.

As is known, the Inca nation was at the mercy of "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon in the January-March period.
