Lima, Dec. 7.
The Governments of Peru, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay backed Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal's decision to proceed with a total recount of disputed ballots in the country's recent presidential election.

The abovementioned States support the preliminary report released by the Organization of American States (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission in Honduras, which calls for an agreement —between the main candidates— that would lead to the acceptance of the final outcome.

"[An outcome] that enjoys legitimacy and people's support, as well as the people's will freely expressed at the polls," the statement said.

The signatory governments urged Honduran citizens to peacefully wait for the vote recount.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening democracy in the region.

Honduras plunged into chaos this week after people poured into the streets with protests, clashes and looting as they waited for official presidential election results to be released.

The Central American country went to the polls Sunday in a race between President Juan Orlando Hernandez —who seeks a second mandate— and his rival candidate Salvador Nasralla.
