The Congress of Peru passed last night by majority a bill establishing sanctions as well as care and prevention measures to counteract sexual harassment in public places.

The head of the Parliament Ana Maria Solorzano stressed the adoption of this rule and said it represents a message of support to women, just a few days before the International Women's Day 2015.

The aforementioned regulatory framework establishes penalties for obscene acts and sexual touching offense, especially that committed against women.

"The important thing is that today (Wednesday) the Congress has pronounced itself about what happens daily. This is the message of the Parliament in the fight to end violence against women (...)," she stated.

Lawmakers approved the bill with 76 votes in favor, none against, and two abstentions, according to a press release issued by the Peruvian Congress.

The street sexual harassment is physical or verbal conduct of sexual nature that involves one or more persons directing unwanted behavior against one or more other persons.
