Peru Congress passes censure motion against PM

After an intense 5-hour debate, the Congress of Peru approved a censure motion against Cabinet Chief, Prime Minister Ana Jara.

The final vote was 72-42 in favor of the motion –which required at least 66 votes to succeed– with two abstentions, and a quorum of 116 lawmakers. 

The Peruvian Congress President Ana Maria Solorzano informed the Congress decision will be transmitted to President Ollanta Humala.

According to the 132 article of Peru’s Constitution, Jara Velasquez will have to resign and the Head of State (President Ollanta Humala) shall accept her resignation.

He will also have to appoint a new Prime Minister and restructure the Cabinet.

The motion of censure was proposed by opposition forces in Congress.
