Pension 65 users from Ichupampa district, in Caylloma province, Arequipa, gathered with school students to share their knowledge of ribbon and sash knitting, hat making, and of traditional dishes preparation, which strengthens the community’s cultural identity.
This occurred at the First Meeting of Productive Knowledge, held in that city. The event featured Pension 65 Executive Director Jose Villalobos and Ichupampa district mayor Rocio Paricela.
Senior locals were recognized during the event for their help as messengers of useful traditional knowledge.
“Each piece of knowledge holds a secret and a story of an elder, and becomes valuable knowledge for the entire community. The intergenerational transfer —that lets seniors pass on their knowledge to youngsters and children— is a powerful strategy the community has in order to access knowledge,” Villalobos said.
A total of 39 seniors participate in this intervention as part of this social program implemented by the Ministry of Development and Social inclusion (Midis) in Ichupampa.
The most experienced senior women demonstrated their skills in spinning of sheep and alpaca’s wool. They also knitted traditional garments like simpaccas (hair ribbons), chumpis (sashes) and anguñas (hat ribbons) in front of school students and the community in general.
Other seniors taught children how to play musical instruments such as “pinkullo” and how to dance traditional dances like Kashua and Wititi.
