Peru: Closing gaps in basic services, a Government’s main priority

Within the last two and a half years, the Fund for Economic Inclusion in Rural Areas (FONIE) has transferred S/.964 million (about US$302 million) to enable more Peruvian citizens to gain access to improved basic services.

It must be noted FONIE is an organization attached to the Development and Social Inclusion Ministry (Midis).

According to the Midis, the measure benefits those living in the country's border areas.

Likewise, S/.790.3 million (about US$247 million) was transferred to local and regional governments.

"Thanks to FONIE, we have managed to close the existing gaps in access to water by 15.6%; sanitation by 19.7%; electrification by 20.7% and mobile telephony in the analyzed districts," it was announced.

To date, 533 districts benefit from this fund.

Likewise, 49 districts belonging to 5 regions of the VRAEM (Valley of the rivers Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro) area received assistance. These were transferred a S/.150.1 million (about US$47 million) fund, whereas S/.109.4 million (about US$34 million) was allocated for the benefit of the Alto Huallaga area residents. The amount will be invested in assisting inhabitants of 61 districts.

FONIE aims at closing coverage gaps and enhancing the quality of the basic services, such as access to: Water and sanitation, electrification, telecommunication, lanes and bridle paths.
