According to National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), Peruvian citrus products will have an easier access to the Chinese market now that the "Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Citrus Fruit from Peru to China" has been modified by the Chinese Health authorities.

Senasa explained the modifications, which go into effect today, were made by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

The amendments will allow citrus products like grapefruits, oranges, mandarins or tangerines and their hybrids to enter the Chinese market.

This will be accomplished once the fruit sourced from a non-fruit fly free area is treated against fruit flies by cold treatment of 2.22°C for 21 consecutive days.

"Increased temperature and longer time of exposure will result in less damage to citrus fruits quality; therefore, exports to China are expected to increase," reported Senasa.

The document outlines the improvement in access was a result of the negotiations held by Senasa with the support of the Citrus Growers Association (ProCitrus) and the Peruvian Embassy in China.
