Peru and Chile, the largest copper producers in the world, can work together to boost their mining production and attract more investment to the sector, said Minister of Energy and Mines Jorge Merino.
Chilean Mining Minister Hernan de Solminihac said, during his recent visit to Lima, the two countries could reach 50 percent of global copper production from the current level of 40 percent, if they develop their current investment portfolio.
In this sense, Merino supported Chilean minister's statements there is much to do together to boost value-added mining exports, empowering providers and using high-level technology.
"There is a collective experience. I think it is good, because as there is a block for development, mining also should have a common force. It's about looking for synergies, opportunities and threats to our markets," he said.
Merino stated both countries can help each other in areas such as consultation, compliance with environmental standards, certification of reserves and financing management through the stock market.
He also said that the growth of the mining sector in Peru should be based on the development of projects with responsibility, thus becoming the engine of other sectors of the economic activity, such as in Chile.
"Peruvians must understand that if we develop all mining projects with the new rules and make a virtuous circle, we will also develop other industries, as in Chile, where mining has supported other industries such as griculture and fishing because everything evolves like a locomotive," he said.
