Peruvian school students participated in the Global Youth and Mining Gaming Program together with children from Canada and the United States, who joined in a cooperative mining challenge using 'Minecraft'.

Peruvian kids were directed by experts of the National Council for Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (Concytec).

The initiative was organized by the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation and seeks to connect children in areas across the Americas where mining industry is significant.

“The event is aimed at encouraging children to be aware of the mining reality in the three participating nations, territories where mining has grown substantially,” said Juana Kuramo, Director of Policies and Programs at Concytec’s CTeI.

Kuramo recalled her institution has a program on science popularization aimed at children of school age– whose objective is to awaken their interest in science through games.

“Minecraft is a videogame that makes kids know a reality and, at the same time, set missions for themselves, awakening their creativity in order to resolve different puzzles that might arise during the game,” she added.

Peruvian 10-13 year old kids participated in the international online event from Concytec facilities. Canadian school students logged in from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and the Science North an agency of the Provincial Government of Ontario in Sudbury whereas the U.S. children did the same from the Anchorage Museum in Alaska.
