12:02 | Lima, Mar. 23.

As a result of recent torrential rains, Rimac River breached its banks and thoroughly flooded km 44 of Central Highway, a key course in Peru's road network.

Homes and businesses lie ravaged under the water in Ricardo Palma district (Lima’s Huarochiri province), where traffic has been blocked in both directions.

Images by Canal N local news station show the force of nature lashing river waters onto the area.

A gas station along the highway is seen covered by floodwaters. A different shot captured stranded cargo trucks and passenger vehicles hopelessly waiting for the torrents to descend.

Authorities are still unable to tell how long it will take before traffic is restored in the zone, where the flood has claimed a 200-meter stretch of Central Highway, the National Police Transit Unit informed.

Thus, Transit Unit head Jorge Lam called on users to avoid the said main way on Thursday.

For the time being, the only alternate route connecting Lima and the country’s central regions is the Cañete-Huancavelica road. Coaches and cargo trucks are allowed.
