Peru burns 1.9 tons of seized drugs

About 1.9 tons of drugs, seized in various police operations, will be destroyed today in the first burning of narcotics this year, reported Peru’s Interior Ministry.

The incineration was scheduled to start at 6:30 local time (11:30 GMT) at a police base in the Lima district of Ate.

The haul included, among other narcotics, cocaine and marijuana.

The Committee for the Destruction of Seized Drugs (CDDD), overseen by the Interior Ministry, was in charge if the burning as part of a national policy to combat drug trafficking.

The CDDD is comprised of representatives from the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, the National Police, among other institutions.
