Peruvian fresh blueberry exports to Canada have amounted to US$788.000 over the last five months since September 2015, when the first shipment was made, Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry reported.
The South American country has become Canada's fourth largest supplier after Chile, the United States and Argentina.
The product's entry into Canada materialized after the National Service for Agricultural Sanitation (Senasa) submitted the required procedures before the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
Magali Silva, Peruvian head of the portfolio, praised these results by emphasizing that Canada is one of the world's largest consumers of such fruit.
"Peru is capable of producing blueberries throughout the year, and the sector's strategy is to make better use of our trade window, that is, to conduct contra-seasonal exports [...]," Silva noted.
National exports to such large market were mainly evident in the fourth quarter of the year.
Currently, Peru is going through a trial period to carry out blueberries exports. Once it is concluded, the said products will be allowed to enter Canada by meeting the same requirements set for other exporting countries. The initial process is expected to end in June 2016.
