Australia and Peru ink trade agreement

13:00 | Canberra (Australia), May. 24.

The Governments of Peru and Australia on Wednesday entered into an agreement on air services to boost bilateral connections.

The document was signed by Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros and Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester.

The agreement will allow airlines designated by each party to offer services departing from or landing in Peru and Australia, thus increasing tourism, trade and bilateral relations.

"The objective of this agreement is to improve air connectivity and tourism between both countries," Minister Ferreyros affirmed.

To this end, the government official will hold meetings with Australian airlines so that they will consider the Inca country among their destinations.

On the other hand, Minister Chester highlighted the countries' "strong tourism, trade and investment relationship" in a release by his office.

"In 2015, there were 3,500 short-term arrivals to Australia from Peru, an increase of 12.7 per cent on the previous year, while nearly 40,000 Australians visited Peru," he stressed.

It is worth noting the agreement needs to be approved by Peru's Legislative Branch and ratified by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Work and vacations

Peru and Australia also entered into an agreement on work and vacations for Peruvian youth (aged 18-31) to travel on holidays and get a temporary job in Australia for up to a year.

"I am confident this agreement will be beneficial for both countries, particularly for our university students, increasing tourism activities and cultural exchange," Ferreyros concluded.
