Peru: Army to stay in Lima region following landslides

Peruvian Army personnel will remain in Lima region's landslide-hit districts until the end of rainy season, Defense Minister Jorge Nieto announced on Sunday.

As is known, rains —which had started a week ago— caused emergency in Lima's Chaclacayo, Chosica districts and Huarochiri province's Santa Eulalia. The latter is located 50.7 kilometers northeast of the nation's capital.

"Army personnel, soldiers, engineers with machineries and infantry will stay in this area until the rainy season ends," he affirmed.

Said measure will remain in place every year to help with prevention tasks, as well as to minimize the onslaughts of nature. 

Likewise, Montesinos underlined there are currently 120 Army soldiers deployed in the mentioned area. 

In addition, the cabinet member stressed that the installation of wire mesh fences and ravines cleaning works helped reduce damages.

Chaclacayo

Landslides hit Chaclacayo on Sunday. The said district is located 32.5 kilometers east of Lima's Main Square.

Water poured into Carretera Central Highway's 26th kilometer in the Santa Ines area.

Due to the onslaught of nature, traffic was stopped and water flowed into homes. Law enforcement has arrived in the area.
