Peru's Defense Minister Jorge Nieto oversaw Army efforts to install one of six refuges in Piura, designed to shelter families that may lose or have already lost their homes as result of natural disasters.

Northern Piura region is one of the Inca nation's hardest hit areas, ravaged by torrential downpour and river overflows in recent days.

The cabinet member inspected corresponding relief works at Miguel Cortez sports center.

"We are setting up 100 tents in this sports center, one tent for every five people; that is to say, one per family," Nieto expressed.

"We need to have shelters in case it is necessary to evacuate the population, if rains persist and complicate the situation," he added.

The high-ranking official affirmed municipal authorities —along with Education Minister Marilu Martens— will be in charge of drawing up the list of beneficiaries. It must be noted Martens leads government assistance in the said region.

Previously, Nieto overflew Piura's areas affected by pelting rains unleashed last Monday.

Lastly, he informed the Peruvian government has deployed over 6,000 Armed Forces members across the country with the purpose of assisting citizens.
