The aquaculture sector production, which reaches a domestic consumption worth S/.500 million (about US$157.23 million), could triple within a short period of time.

The result will be possible thanks to the government-implemented measures, aimed at consolidating the Lima-based Aquaculture Technological Innovation Centers (CITE), Peruvian Deputy Minister of Fisheries Juan Carlos Requejo affirmed.

The official indicated that the over S/.71 million (US$22.32 million) will be invested to establish the Lima Aquaculture CITE. It will be linked to five technical units based in regions Puno, Piura, Ica, Ancash and San Martin.

Within the framework of the National Plan for Productive Diversification, the government aims at relaunching the Peruvian aquaculture sector, since it can turn into one of the country's engines for economic growth.

The sector’s potential is "huge" in Peru. Currently, less than 5% of fishing output comes from aquaculture activities, whereas it accounts for nearly 50% in other nations.
