The newly-appointed Peruvian ambassador to China, Juan Carlos Capuñay, announced that both sides are trying to set up a meeting between President Ollanta Humala and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the 2014 APEC summit.

In this regard, Mr. Capuñay has confirmed the Peruvian leader's participation in the 26th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting scheduled for November 8-10 in Beijing, China.

“As is the case at every summit, APEC is a great opportunity to meet other presidents. In fact, talks regarding a possible meeting with China’s president Xi Jinping are already being held,” he told El Peruano official daily.

The aim of the meeting is to strengthen achievements of the railway interconnection megaproject linking the Pacific coast of Peru to the Atlantic coast of Brazil, which realization will be supported by the Asian giant.

“We plan to bring specific proposals concerning its execution. Likewise, the two countries will work out a long-term development agenda,” he noted.

China, Peru and Brazil issued a joint statement on cooperation for the Peru-Brazil transcontinental railway project on July 17.

Furthermore, he highlighted the comprehensive bilateral relation including aspects such as infrastructure, industry, security and disaster prevention, as well as the active and proactive cooperation being forged by the two sides.

Peru and China have witnessed rapid development of bilateral relations. Indeed, ties reached the top level of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation when President Humala visited the Asian country in 2013.

It should be noted that China is Peru’s second most important trade partner and its largest partner in Asia. Moreover, the trade between both nations has amounted to more than US$15 billion.
