The Peruvian Government has managed to carry out 95% of its frost and cold spell prevention plan, Defense Minister Jorge Nieto affirmed on Tuesday.

The 2017 Frost and Cold Spell "Antes Peru" (Peru Ahead) Multisectoral Mitigation Plan is a S/107-million (about US$32.96 million) initiative to avert major damage and casualties caused by freezing temperatures.

The government official noted said resources were used to provide local and regional governments with the necessary supplies to address low temperatures.

"Lung disease had dropped by a 100% a week and a half ago […]. We have reacted quickly, and this contributes to prevention," Minister Nieto said during an aid delivery activity in southern Ayacucho region.

Joined by President Kuczynski's wife Nancy Lange, Nieto took part in the distribution of six tons of aid —warm clothes, furry blankets and fleece blankets— in Pampa Cangallo and Occollo frost-prone areas.

Items were donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and delivered to Ayacucho's Regional Government through the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci).

In addition to the winter accessories, assistance included health care services in specialties like dermatology, dentistry, nutrition, pediatrics, geriatrics, otolaryngology and pharmacy.
