International tourists spend more money in Peru than any other country in Latin America after Brazil which earns the top spot on the list, the country’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister (Mincetur) announced Friday.

According to new data from the sector's recently released report, international travelers in Peru record an average daily spending of US$ 985 and it is topped only by Brazil, neighboring eastern country in which foreign visitors spend US$ 1.167 a day.

Magali Silva, Mincetur’s head, noted that Peru is followed by Argentina in the ranking with an average spending totaling US$ 755 per tourist per day; Chile, US$ 612; and Mexico with US$ 576, among others.

The Peruvian minister went on to underline that tourists from the United Kingdom spend the most money in the Andean nation with an spending worth US$ 2.413, while Japanese travelers have the highest average daily spending with US$ 349.

Citing official figures, the high-level Humala administration official stressed that all overseas tourists choose to visit Lima, the nation’s capital, and Cusco which is Peru’s leading travel destination.

Likewise, Silva reported that the markets of interest for the Peruvian tourism industry are made up of 14 countries which generate 77 percent of the foreign exchange receipts from this sector to the country.
