Pedro Cateriano sworn in as new Prime Minister of Peru (Full story)

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala swore in Pedro Alvaro Cateriano Bellido as the nation’s new Prime Minister in a ceremony held on Thursday evening at the Government Palace in Lima, Peru.

"Yes, I swear," the recently appointed official said firmly and concisely as he assumed his new post to the applause of those attending the ceremony held at the Golden Hall.

Pedro Cateriano is a lawyer specializing in constitutional law. He served as congressman from 1990 to 1992 and joined the Advisory Committee at the Ministry of Justice and the Constitutional Reform Advisory Committee, led by former President of the Republic, Valentin Paniagua.

He was Deputy Minister of Justice between 2001 and 2002, and served as agent of the Peruvian State to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the Chavin de Huantar case in 2012.

Afterwards, President Humala proceeded to take the oath of other members of the ministerial team that includes diplomat Ana Maria Sanchez as Minister of Foreign Affairs, who succeeds Gonzalo Gutierrez in that post.

Mr. Humala also administered oath to new ministers of Defense, Jakke Valakivi Alvarez; and Justice and Human Rights, Gustavo Adrianzen Olaya, who replaces Fredy Otarola.

Retained in their posts were Ministers of Economy and Finance, Alonso Segura; Interior, Luis Perez Guadalupe; Education, Jaime Saavedra; Health, Anibal Velasquez; Agriculture and Irrigation, Juan Manuel Benites Ramos; and Labor and Employment Promotion, Daniel Maurate.

The Head of State also retained Ministers of Production, Piero Ghezzi Solis; Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva; Energy and Mines, Rosa Maria Ortiz; Transport and Communications, Jose Gallardo; Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Milton von Hesse; Women and Vulnerable Populations, Marcela Huaita; Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal; Culture, Diana Alvarez-Calderon Gallo; Development and Social Inclusion, Paola Bustamante Suarez.

The ceremony was attended by authorities of all branches of government, holders of public institutions, and representatives of regional and local governments.
