Over 840,000 tourists travel across Peru during papal visit

12:23 | Lima, Jan. 21.

More than 840,000 domestic and international visitors traveled across Peru during Pope Francis' historic visit to this country, National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Head Fredy Gamarra estimated Sunday.

"More than 800,000 domestic tourists and 40,000 foreigners have traveled across the country during Pope Francis' visit," he was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.

According to Gamarra, most international visitors came from neighboring nations.

Additionally, the flow of travelers —who joined the Holy Father's activities in the Inca country— exceeded initial expectations.

Pope's apostolic journey to Peru began on January 18 and will run until today. His trip included stops in Lima, Trujillo and Puerto Maldonado.

Gamarra went on to say the papal visit is likely to generate an economic benefit worth up to US$100 million.
