So far this year, 400,000 newborns at the national level have joined Peru's Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) scheme as part of the government’s effort to provide universal health coverage under its commitment to early childhood development, Health Minister Anibal Velasquez informed.

“Every child that is born must have health insurance. As of January this year we are going to be able to automatically enroll any newborn in the Comprehensive Health Insurance, no matter their socio-economic condition, in case they don’t hold private insurance coverage,” he said.

To this end, neonates need to have a Certificate of Living Newborn, whose registration has been recently automated. “More than 700,000 kids have this document and over 4000,000 have been enrolled in SIS so far this year,” he added.

Velasquez explained his sector’s next challenge is to optimize the services the State offers to SIS-insured individuals, which involves all Executive Branch sectors, regional and local governments.

In this sense, different training workshops are been organized to provide the population with public services at a high quality level.

Minister Velasquez made this announcement after participating in the activity “Reaffirming our Commitment to Early Childhood in Peru”, organized by the ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), which featured Peru’s Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano along with various State ministers.

The meeting addressed results of workshops held in 24 regions of the country including discussion panels, regional experience, establishment of agreement and conclusions. Over 600 regional government officials and civil society representatives were brought together.
