More than 3000 women have earned their rightful place as authorities of Peru in this year’s regional, municipal elections, the National Elections Board, or JNE, informed during the International Forum on Women's Political Rights.
This figure accounts for 24.6% of the total number of authorities elected (12,692), compared to 75.4% of men.
Nevertheless, this represents a 2.9 percent increase over the numbers from a similar process in 2010.
Milagros Suito, director of JNE’s Citizen Civic Formation and Education, hailed the increased number of women elected to councilors at the provincial and district levels, as well as their wider participation in regional governance to serve in regional vice president positions.
She also highlighted the first case of a woman who has been elected as regional governor during this year’s elections. Her name is Yamila Osorio and lives in Arequipa.
