New tourist circuit to promote Peru's Pomac Forest area

The Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary, in northern Peru's Lambayeque region, is set to become an important cultural tourist circuit along the northern coast of the country, it was reported Tuesday.
Romy Tello Chavez, official at Sierra Exportadora, noted this popular destination spot for both domestic and foreign visitors is the only historical sanctuary from the four exisiting which is located in the northern area of the Andean nation. 

The protected area is located in Batán Grande, an archaeologically-rich swath which spans nearly 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Ferreñafe, or 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from the coastal northern city of Chiclayo.

The historical sanctuary is a refuge for carob trees, birds, and varied flora 70 bird species, 7 mammal species, and 9 reptile species have been spoted living in within the protected area.

The sanctuary houses nearly 36 pyramids from the Sican culture (called “huacas”), where archaeologists have discovered some of the finest Pre-Columbian pieces to date.

The Sicán were a group of people that inhabited the Peruvian northern coast about 750-1,375 AD.
