A new species of frog was discovered at Alto Purus National Park, a protected natural area in Madre de Dios and Ucayali regions managed by the National Service of Natural Protected Areas—Sernanp.

The find was made by researchers from the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute—IIAP, the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh in the United States, and the Museum of Natural History at Universidad de San Antonio Abad in Cusco.

Other collaborators include investigators from the Museum of Natural History at Universidad Nacional de San Agustin and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), as well as Sernanp forest rangers.

The new species was named “Pristimantis IIAP” after the institute that took part in its discovery.

The amphibian was found on a 2013-2015 expedition for a herpetological inventory held across the Alto Purus National Park, the Purus Communal Reserve and its buffer zone located in the Purus, La Novia, Sepahua and Yurua Rivers Basin in Ucayali region with the technical field support of forest rangers and experts.

Its detailed description will be published in an issue of Annals of Carnegie Museum. This will be the first of a series of publications that will reveal the mysteries of still unveiled species in 2016-2017.
