The region of Moquegua, through the “Regional Food Support Program” (in Spanish, PAAR), plans to distribute for free anchovy catches among the most vulnerable areas, so that its consumption can reduce the rate of child malnutrition in the area.

According to Moquegua’s Governor Jaime Rodriguez, PAAR will not receive funding from the State, but instead, private companies will donate a percentage of their catches in exchange of the fishing authorization granted by the regional entity.

“Fishing catches will be handed out among people living in slums. This way, child malnutrition –which is high in Moquegua– will be reduced,” Rodriguez told Andina news agency.

He has even considered the possibility to propose the National School Food Program, Qali Warma, to establish an alliance with regional governments located in the country’s coastline with the aim to distribute fishing products at schools in southern Peru.

“We are going to end child malnutrition, and I’m planning to meet Qali Warma officials to include anchovies in school students’ diet,” he pointed out.
