An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck early Thursday the Peruvian northern region of Lambayeque, Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.

The tremor occurred at 08:42 local time (13:42 GMT) and was centered 69 kilometers (42.8 miles) west of Pimentel town in Chiclayo province.

Seismologists said the quake struck at sea with a depth of 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) and was unnoticed by the local population.

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of property damage or injuries so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
