The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is the first trade group to include a chapter on development, which is focused on inclusive growth, gender equality, as well as education, science and technology promotion, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) informed.
“For instance, joint activities with other TPP countries to train women entrepreneurs and ease their access to financing –which is required for export-related activities– will be possible through this chapter proposed by Peru,” Mincetur stated.
Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva said this will enable exchange of experiences with countries that have implemented successful development policies by taking advantages of trade opportunities.
“This will be an opportunity to put on the map inclusive policies in education and health applied by this government,” she explained.
Unlike other trade agreements, the TPP includes chapters seeking to ensure that its benefits can be enjoyed by the whole population.
It will also foster the country’s economic development and competitiveness, and the integration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMES) into foreign trade and global supply chains.
“The chapter establishes a Committee on Development in which representatives from each country will share experiences and good practices on design and development policy formulation. They will also identify ways to take further advantage of TPP benefits on that matter,” she added.
Furthermore, the chapter makes it easy for international organizations, cooperation agencies, private sector and civil society to get involved in the implementation of joint specific initiatives in favor of TPP countries’ development.
“This way, Peru will continue to work with the bloc’s partners so as to promote further development through different tools provided by the TPP,” the minister concluded.
