Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) highlighted the recent official visit paid by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Peru and deemed it as an "historic act."
It will allow both nations to strengthen bilateral ties and grant a political and economic boost aimed at consolidating the Peru-Turkey Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the organization stressed.
These nations have been negotiating a trade agreement since 2014, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva reminded.
"Last week, both negotiating teams managed to close the competitiveness chapter online. Meanwhile, they continue exchanging counter-proposals concerning pending items on the intellectual property chapter expected to be closed before the coming fifth negotiating round takes place in Ankara," she said.
Closed chapters
To date, five out of 20 chapters have been closed such as those related to cooperation; customs and trade easement; phytosanitary and sanitary measures; technical obstacles to trade and competitiveness.
The two previous negotiating rounds were held in Ankara and Lima in the period comprised between January and November, 2014.
A third round took place in the Turkish capital in May 2015, whereas the fourth one was hosted by Peru last November.
Official visit
Turkish President paid a visit to Lima joined by seven State Ministers and a delegation composed of over 100 entrepreneurs, who attended the Peru-Turkey Business Forum organized by the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).
On Tuesday night, President Ollanta Humala along with his counterpart addressed the FTA negotiation process.
Both officials highlighted their joint political willingness to sign it.
"It will allow us to benefit from the high potential of both economies and substantially expand trade, which has over the previous decade increased almost fivefold after having totaled over US$241 million in 2015," Silva noted.
Market
Among the most important products exported to Turkey quinoa, canned asparagus and artichoke, green coffee, cuttlefish, squid, shells, frozen seafood mixture, sacha inchi oil, maca, cat's claw, wood-made kitchen items and fungicides stand out.
On the other hand, Mincetur representatives will attend fairs: Food Ingredients in May (agro-industry sector), World Food Istanbul in September (agro-industry), Sirha in November (agro-industry) and Premiere Vision in October (dressmaking sector) to take place in Turkey.
