An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale hit the coastal region of Ica in southern Peru on Tuesday morning, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.
The quake struck at 23:12 local time (04:12 GMT on Wednesday) and its epicenter was located at 49 kilometers (30.4 miles) southwest of Ica city in southern Peru.
The event had at a depth of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) and was unnoticed by the population.
No casualties or damages have been reported so far from the tremor.
Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
