Machu Picchu, Lima rank among top 10 best destinations in South America
Lima, May. 02 (ANDINA). The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, in Cusco, and Lima, Peru's capital, were ranked among the top 10 best destinations to visit in South America, according to Tripadvisor website.
Machu Picchu is listed second behind Buenos Aires, Argentina and the site stresses that it is the most-visited place in Peru.
"High in the cloud forest, the ruins of this former center of worship and royal retreat sprawl across the landscape, an awesome display of staircases, carved tombs and sacred temples," the website says.
Trivadvisor also recalled that the access to the citadel is available via train from Cusco or a multi-day hiking trail.
According to the site, Lima is in the ninth place, and it mentioned that the Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 and that is "a fascinating city and a treasure trove of history."
