The recently launched second stretch of Line 1 of the Lima Metro network, Peru’s busiest public transportation system, hit a record by carrying over 270,000 commuters on its third day of operation.

The growth in ridership of the metro network in the nation’s capital Lima kicked off on Friday, July 25, with 50,000 total boardings, while on Saturday, July 26, it registered more than 70,000 passengers.

“The service saw its higher ridership day on record with about 150,000 riders on Sunday, July 27,” said Rodrigo Fernandez, head of Institutional Relations at the first section of Lima Metro.

He continued, "It was the highest ever figure for a weekend in the system’s nearly three years of service".

“Our increase in ridership is indicative of quality service,” he told Andina news agency, adding, “When you give residents effective mobility choices and connections to life, they will ride".

Furthermore, the official noted the sales of card for Metro passes shot upwards within 72 hours of operation since inception of commercial operation of the trench 2.

The Line 1’s second stretch connects 12.4 kilometers (7.7 miles) long highly congested stretch between east and west of the Peruvian capital.

Fernandez, stressed the Metro's focus has and will continue to be on the customer. The stretch 2 runs from the Grau station, in downtown Lima, to the far east district of San Juan de Luringacho.
