The Executive Unit 005 Naylamp-Lambayeque is carrying out a series of reinforcement works along the riverside of Lambayeque region in order to protect 22 archaeological sites in the area in view of the arrival of El Niño weather conditions.
The Unit’s Head Carlos Aguilar Calderon pointed out works will also involve the protection of historic sites and 13 museums in Lambayeque.
“In addition, works are been carried out at Bandera, Chornancap, Saltur, Pampa Grande huacas (temples) and various sites, as well as in Tucume and other historic places such as San Juan de La Punta, which is an old temple," Aguilar told Andina news agency.
The Ministry of Culture has managed the transfer of S/.22 million (about US$6.9 million) for the execution of protection works in archaeological sites across the country, of which S/.7 million have been allocated to Lambayeque.
“We have been awarded an additional sum of S/.500,000 (about US$158,328) due to be used this and next month on protection and defense initiatives,” he added.
Aguilar explained priority will be given to the most emblematic spots out of over 500 archaeological sites located in Lambayeque.
