The week-long Kaypi Peru Festival in Washington, D.C. United States, set attendance record by attracting more than 36,000 people, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said Thursday.
The event, which wrapped up last Sunday after being held at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, was aimed at promoting the Andean nation’s rich cultural heritage and its diverse traditional arts in the U.S.
"The festival was intended to spread the image of Peru in the United States’ capital and proved to be an excellent example of our enormous cultural wealth," said Harold Forsyth, Peru’s ambassador to the U.S.
During its six-days, this year’s annual edition featured 19 high-profile artisans from several Peruvian regions who showcased their latest output of handicrafts, such as jewelry, pottery, fiber textile and embroideries.
Likewise, the 2014’s event displayed a range of music and dance performances, hands-on activities as well as films and photo exhibitions of Peru’s hinterlands, lectures and food exhibition.
The festival was organized by the Embassy of Peru and a sponsored by the ACA, ARKive, The Mountain Institute, Grupo Corzo, Pisco Portón and the National Geographic Museum.
