Renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez announced the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru and his Symphony for Peru's Youth Choir will give a benefit concert for victims of rains, floods and landslides that have struck Peru over the past days.

The performance is slated for April 1 at 7 PM at Lima's main square. Admission is free, but only granted to guests bringing nonperishable food, water or personal care items.

Speaking from Vienna, Florez noted that despite distance there will always be "something you can do" like fundraising or appealing to the sensibility of people and institutions.

According to Flores, the show was an initiative of Lima's Municipality, Caritas, Telefonica and RPP. "Let's get together and sing a Symphony for Peru because #PeruDaLaMano [Peru gives a hand]," said the singer.

Some 6,000 kids from across the country have enrolled in Sinfonia por el Peru (Symphony for Peru) program.

"We want to reach some 20,000 by 2020; our secret is music and, through it, social transformation," he pointed out.

"Children build their self-esteem and values through music, which leads them to a better life. In a sense, music saves them, thanks to their joy, enthusiasm, curiosity and attitude," he explained.
