Peru’s Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio affirmed his sector is working to build the best police service in Latin America before 2021.

“Our dream is to have the best police in Latin America, and history contains the seed of such police,” he said.

Remarks were made during an international forum on internal order and public safety held at Real Felipe Fortress in Callao, in the presence of former Presidents Ricardo Lagos (Chile) and Cesar Gaviria (Colombia), as well as former Colombian Police Director General Oscar Naranjo, who was named as “The Best Policeman in the World” by the International Association of Chiefs in 2010.

While noting the high level of professionalism displayed by Colombian and Chilean police forces, Basombrio said he is confident Peru will outpace its two neighbors in terms of internal order.

On the matter, Basombrio stressed the need to strengthen specialized police units and guide them in the fight against organized crime.

The government plans to provide police officers with state-of-the-art technology and special units to help target, infiltrate and arrest criminal gangs.
