The International Monetary Fund (IMF) deems Peru's government fiscal management as the best in the region, Economy and Finance Minister Alfredo Thorne said on Wednesday.
Such were the views of IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, whom he met during his trip to Davos (Switzerland) for the 2017 World Economic Forum last week.
"[Lagarde] congratulated us on our fiscal management, calling it an example in the region. And she also praised the financial stability Peru has maintained despite the FED's rate rise," he said.
In this sense, the IMF leader highlighted Peru's Central Reserve Bank (BCR) as the only one not to increase its interest rate. This, Lagarde said, "should provide the country with a major boost in terms of growth and financing in the future."
On the other hand, the Finance head mentioned a dinner he and Prime Minister Fernando Zavala, who joined him in Davos, shared with four Nobel Laureates in Economics: Robert J. Shiller, Angus Deaton, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Christopher A. Pissarides.
"What I got from the meeting is that, despite everything that is going on in the U.S. and the critical political risk, the global economy is in a better situation, so we will have support," he concluded.
