An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale hit the southern Peruvian region of Moquegua in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.

The tremor occurred at 02:46 local time (07:46 GMT) and was unnoticed by the local population.

According to a IGP report, the quake’s epicenter was 22 kilometers (13.6 miles) northeast of Omate town, at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).

According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of property damage or injuries so far from the quake.

Peru lies in the so called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
