An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit the coastal region of Ica in southern Peru on Monday morning, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.

The tremor occurred at 09:34 local time (14:34 GMT) and its epicenter was about 44 kilometers (27.3 miles) southwest of Palpa, the smallest of five provinces comprising Peru’s Ica region.

Seismologists said the quake's depth was measured at 28 kilometers (17.3 miles) and it was unnoticed by the local population.

No casualties or damages have been reported so far from the event, according to Civil Defense authorities.

Peru lies in the so called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
