In a festive atmosphere along with Ancash region communities, the Huascaran National Park will celebrate tomorrow, July 1, its 40th anniversary preserving one of the areas with greatest biological and cultural diversity in Peru.

The state-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) described Huascaran as a Central Andean Wet Puna (eco-region) including beautiful gorges, lagoons and snow-capped mountains that provide local populations with a valuable ecosystemic service.

On the occasion of this celebration, Sernanp has been carrying out various activities in Huaraz city, which started with a workshop aimed at environmental education teachers on the GLOBE project, an initiative that addresses topics related to the environment and atmospheric phenomena in this protected area since 1999.

The activities kicked off with an anniversary-themed parade on Sunday, June 28 at the city’s main square.

In addition, children will have the chance to get to know, play and take a picture with “taruca” and “spectacled bear” representations, Huascaran Park pets.

On July 2, the Professional Association of Engineers of Huaraz will hold the second environmental interpretation contest, which this time will be focused on the Pastoruri glacier and the climate change route.

A photographic exhibition called “Huascaran Biosphere Reserve, Living and Development Space” will take place on July 6 at the Huaraz Cultural Center.

A meeting with conservation leaders will be held on the 7th at the Huascaran National Park auditorium.

Anniversary-related activities will run through July 10, when a book on the 40th anniversary of the Huascaran National Park will be launched at the aforementioned Cultural Center.
