Peru's nature tourism potential and extraordinary destinations for birdwatching lovers were showcased once again at Global Big Day 2017, taking second place in the international competition with 1,338 different bird species.

Held on May 13, Global Big Day saw the participation of 145 countries from around the world.

Peru claimed the first spot in 2014 and 2015 editions with 1,183 and 1,242 species, respectively.

This year's results put Colombia on the first position after 1,487 species were registered.

According to eBird and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology —sponsors of the worldwide birding event— 6,564 of the world's species were recorded by birdwatchers this year.

The competition took place across the entire national territory, involving 28 natural protected areas, administered by State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp).

Peru enjoys a privileged position thanks to the vast biodiversity in its territory.

Experts, forest rangers, volunteers, partner organizations and private firms were deployed in natural protected areas such as Alto Mayo Protection Forest, Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and Tabaconas Namballe National Sanctuary, among others.
