Germany's humanitarian aid to "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon disaster victims totals more than €1 million, its Ambassador to Peru Jörg Ranau announced.

The European country's support includes the distribution of 450 tons of relief —food, clothing, drinking water, hygiene items, shelter materials and motor pumps— in affected areas of: Piura, Lambayeque, Chulucanas, Chimbote, Ica, Trujillo and Chosica.

Aid was channeled through Germany's Federal Foreign Office (€300,000), the German Red Cross (€375,000) and Caritas Internationalis (€50,000).

Similarly, the German Embassy in Lima distributed emergency household packages (€50,000) for 700 affected citizens in northern Piura region.

Germany also engaged in a water treatment and supply cooperation project with the Peruvian Red Cross, as well as the reconstruction of houses in Piura and Tumbes regions (€250,000).

In addition, Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) helped restore sanitation sewerage systems damaged by floods.

BMZ's contribution —valued at €200,000— also included five experts, as well as three tons of electromechanical and personal protection equipment for disaster-hit areas.

The German civil society also joined the international response through emergency projects worth over €130,000, as well as voluntary contributions from citizens, companies and various organizations valued at €31,500.

"This is an occasion to express our solidarity with Peru in this catastrophic situation," the diplomat said.

The European nation assesses the possibility of providing further support in the reconstruction stage, especially in water and sanitation projects.

Coastal El Niño studies

On a different note, the diplomat underlined Germany's cooperation in terms of studying "Coastal El Niño" event in Peruvian waters.

In this sense, German research vessel Meteor has been conducting various studies since April 11 to learn more about the Andean country's marine resources, as well as Coastal El Niño's effect.

Remarks were made after the signing of a €10-million grant agreement with Peru's Environment Ministry for marine and coastal protected areas conservation.

On the other hand, Peru's Environment Minister Elsa Galarza thanked the international community for its support during the Inca nation's recent El-Niño-related emergency.
