French President Emmanuel Macron could put off his visit to Lima, initially scheduled for September, the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry announced.
However, French media announced on Tuesday the French leader would not attend the meeting, as Paris has already been chosen to stage the international sports event.
"Should we get confirmation that President Macron will no longer attend the said meeting, both countries [Peru and France] will agree on a new date for the French Head of State to visit Peru," the Inca nation's Foreign Ministry said in a release.
The Ministry also addressed a recent communication —dated July 28— by French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian, who greeted the Inca country on its 196th Independence Day anniversary.
In the document, Minister Le Drian underlined Peru and France's "fruitful cooperation" in fighting climate change, as well as dialogue prospects in light of Peru's
non-permanent membership to the United Nations Security Council for the 2018-2019 period.
Lastly, Minister Le Drian expressed his readiness to reinforce bilateral economic ties, as well as French investment in Peruvian water and sewerage infrastructure projects.
